Jhalawar district is known for the highest rainfall in the Rajasthan state. This rain is very helpful for the farmers of the region. Besides this satisfying rainfall, district has a lot of irrigation dams, ponds, and medium scale projects, that are serving according to the needs of farmers.

Jhalawar is also known for the Production of Citrus (Oranges). The area around Bhawani Mandi has the distinction of being an important place on the International and National Citrus (Naarangi) fruit map. Orange-laden orchards provide a tempting sight. Citrus produced in Jhalawar region are of export-quality, and are exported to various foreign countries. Citrus-belt is spread around the Bhawani Mandi, Jhalawar and Pirawa sub-divisions.

HORTICULTURE OF JHALAWAR


Jhalawar district is well-known for the production of Citrus (Oranges), It is also known as "SMALL NAGPUR", since it ranks, second  place in orange production in India after Nagpur (Maharastra). Area around Bhawani Mandi has the distinction of being an important place on the International and National Citrus fruit map. Citrus belt spread around Bhawani Mandi, Jhalrapatan and Pirawa sub divisions produces oranges which are exported to various foreign countries.


                                    

According to revenue records the production of oranges in 1984-85 was merely 794 hectares. With the establishment of Directorate of Horticulture at State level, In 1989-90 impetus was given to increase the production and productivity of oranges in Jhalawar. According to  Horticulture department, the total area of oranges in 2004-05 is 15440 hectares, out of which 9000 hectares is in bearing stage. Year 2003-04 experienced bumper harvest of oranges touching 194700 metric tones.

In order to boost up orange production and to provide risk coverage due to scarcity of water during flowering period, an innovative scheme "WEATHER INSURANCE FOR ORANGES" was initiated in the district in year 2004-05. Under this scheme 388 orange growers who took 1702 policies received insurance claim amounting Rs. 19.248 lacs from insurance company. State government  subsidized the premium paid by orange grower to the tune of Rs. 4.977 lacs.

Jhalawar district also ranks number one in the state in area and production of Coriander. Year 2002-03 witnessed highest area touching 88,563 hectares with a production of 86,884.4 metric tone. Looking to immense potential State government has recently declared Jhalawar along with Kota, Bundi, Baran  and Chittorgarh as "AGRI EXPORT ZONE FOR CORIANDER".

Encouragement is being given to make proper use of limited source of water by installation of Drip System in  orchards. 

In year 2004-05 new orchards have been established in 525 hectares (orange, amla  guawa and lemon) & 133133 quality fruits plants have been distributed to farmers.
